The Story of Chocolate Peanut

"Chocolatepeanut.com" was an idea that started many years ago and stayed just that--an idea that sat on the back burner. I wanted to have a site that featured articles, products, and a place to essentially spend time browsing...sort of this cafe on the web for pet lovers and creative types. It's not an original idea at all. There are lots of sites out there that combine shopping, chatting, blogging, and reading that are interesting and interactive. Chocolatepeanut.com is rather small, but hopefully the site is an inspiring and informative stop on the web. And like a cafe, there's also unique art and gifts to buy. "Chocolate Peanut" was a nickname for my chocolate labrador, Zoey. After I graduated college, I moved to Washington, DC, and my little chocolate puppy was there with me.

I used to take her everywhere--shopping at Eastern Market, sitting outside at cafes, going to dog parks and dog-friendly stores, and jogging our favorite routes in Georgetown, along the Potomac and the monuments, or Connecticut Avenue. It's that spirit and those memories that kept me thinking about doing a site where other people have similar memories and can inspire each other. She was my inspiration for the site.

I did everything possible to keep my Peanut with me just one more day, and I'm convinced that I did. I dodged lumps and bumps that weren't always benign, seizures of the worst kind, and whatever medical emergency there was I conquered them all, but I couldn't win the battle against a failing heart. She died in my arms of congestive heart failure the day before Thanksgiving 2002 at 12 years old. My father's words comfort me in that I was chosen to be with her, not the other way around. She was truly a gift, and I was very dependent on her. She was always being photographed, and after one release of the shutter, she would walk off the set dragging props with her. She appears on the cover of a book I published and was truly a testament of the therapeutic value a dog can give a person. Her exuberence for life amazed me. Now I am blessed with the spirit of her memory. This site is dedicated to her.
